RSL Classical Music Theory Grade 1 is an integrated music theory guidebook and workbook designed to introduce students to the essential foundations of classical music theory. As part of RSL Awards' Classical Music Theory series, it provides structured explanations alongside exercises and practice questions, allowing students to learn and apply theory within a single resource.
The Grade 1 material builds a strong foundation in music notation, keys, scales, intervals, chords, rhythm, transposition and musical terminology. It can be used as preparation for the RSL Classical Music Theory Grade 1 examination, as well as a standalone theory resource for students and teachers.
Students develop the theoretical knowledge needed to understand and communicate basic musical ideas, including:
Reading and writing music using standard notation
Recognising treble and bass clefs
Understanding key signatures and major scales
Identifying tones and semitones
Recognising and writing basic intervals
Understanding tonic triads
Reading common rhythms, rests and time signatures
Applying basic transposition
Understanding common musical terms, dynamics and articulation
Applying theoretical knowledge through written exercises and practice questions
The Grade 1 material establishes the foundation for RSL's progressive Classical Music Theory pathway, which continues through Grade 5.
