What Students Will Develop
Students will develop:
Basic guitar playing technique
Open-position chord playing
Power-chord fundamentals
String crossing
Basic rhythmic control
Recognition and use of rests
Major scale awareness
Major and minor pentatonic scales
Basic riff playing
Playing along with a backing track
Basic notation and music-reading skills
Playback and listening skills
Performance confidence
Awareness of contemporary guitar styles
The Debut performance pieces are deliberately short, with RSL specifying a maximum duration of approximately one minute. This allows beginners to concentrate on basic notation, note values, sound, control and synchronisation rather than having to sustain a long performance.
Technical Exercises
Group A – Scales
At ♩ = 70 bpm, students prepare:
C Major
A Minor Pentatonic
E Minor Pentatonic
These introduce the student to basic scale patterns and fundamental fretboard movement.
Group B – Chords
Students prepare open-position chords:
The examiner selects individual chords, which are strummed once as directed.
Group C – Riff
Students perform a riff from the Grade Debut book with a backing track.
The riff introduced in the opening bar is subsequently played in the same shape against different root notes. This develops basic riff transposition, fretboard awareness and rhythmic synchronisation.
